One who lives in the United States of America, obeying the law, following community standards and ethics, paying taxes, speaking the language, exhibiting national pride, and following the ideals of the founding fathers: self-reliance, ingenuity, duty, responsibility, and RESPECT.
Domingo is an American: he makes an active effort to obey the laws of the land, pays his taxes instead of living on handouts, speaks English, and treats people with respect. He celebrates his Latin culture, but he's proud to be an American, and calls himself an American, not "hispanic-american", "multi-cultural", nor "mexican". Some day, Domingo is going to run for governor of California, and I'll vote for him.

Umbobo is from Nigeria, and although he lives in the United States, he lives under the assumed name "John Bobo", steals money from people, and considers America his personal toilet. He operates with impunity because he knows the law can't catch him, and they will just deport him if they do catch him, and he can just come back and shit on everyone some more. Umbobo is NOT an American, he is a piece of shit.

Jose is an undocumented migrant worker. Jose finds it easier and easier to skirt the law, and eventually outright break the law to suit his needs. Although there is a legal process for living and working in the United States, Jose chooses to do whatever benefits him the most instead. Jose sends his kids to public school and gets free healthcare at the county facility, but does not pay taxes. Jose engages in identityh theft by using someone else's Social Security Number to obtain employment illegally, and in some cases, he uses their personal information to sign up for bank accounts and credit cards. Why not help himself? He feels that since he lives here, he deserves it! 15 of Jose's closest relatives live with him in a 2 bedroom house, parking vehicles on the lawn and trashing out the neighborhood. Jose's kids have been brought up to disregard the law, and are arrested on a regular basis. Since Jose's oldest kids are also illegal, they just get released instead of incarcerated, because the cops don't want to fill out the extra paperwork, and the legal process to incarcerate illegals is too convoluted to follow. Jose knows that this is because his government, the mexican government, is closely involved in forming US policy regarding mexican illegals. Jose's kids are growing up to be competent and dangerous rapists, thieves, and murderers. Jose takes pride in his mexican heritage, and prominently displays a mexican flag in the back window of his truck. Jose feels that it's COMPLETELY UNJUST for him to be expected to put forth an effort or pay for services he receives. Although Jose LIVES in America, he is not an American. Jose is a parasite.

While several have said the most obvious fat, stupid, wasteful, rich and racist. I'll add a few new ones to all those hateful, ugly comments.
Americans are truly for the most part caring and giving people. Most people wish they could be American. There are thousands, maybe even millions of foreigners who try every year to get that coveted citizenship.
Most are tolerant, but there comes a time when enough is enough, that being said it is almost the norm to bash Americans and if an American show any sense of pride they are labeled a dreaded "Ugly American"
Americans are for the majority the complete opposite of the bible thumping hick stereotype.
Americans are of various races, religions and cultures a young country that is better than the countries who consistently bash them yet ask for our help when their pathetic and lousy asses can't get their shit together!
Americans can handle being called every negative name in the book by citizens of countries that are suppose to be allies. Some of these foreigners are in the US spouting their hate and they wonder why we don't like them????
It seems as if being a "super" power is not so super. If it means dealing with bs like anti-american rants. Americans just plain kick ass. It is just fact. Anyone who is an American basher is nothing but a lowlife piece of trash who only wishes they could be the shit coming out of an Americans ass. To those Americans who are ashamed of being American go fuck yourself. And to the other Americans keep Rockin'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1.This kicks ass!! This is American!
2.Oh no! My country is in trouble! we need help call an American!

A term used to describe citizens of the country "America" (Shortened from "The United States of America")

On a less objective angle... An American (From the country America. Yes, while it can technically be used to describe those on the continents on the western hemisphere, no one else uses the term, therefore, it is fair to say) is someone who supports their country.

And no, that does not mean agreeing with everything the government says or does (It's doubtable that any average citizen around the world agrees with their government completely) but to call one's self a citizen of a country, commiting acts of treason make such a statement questionable.

While the United States is lenient on letting its people badmouth and wish for their country's loss, demoralizing the troops who are working so hard for their country and to liberate the innocent people of the Middle East, it is hard to call someone an American when that person is embarrassed to even be part of The U.S.

No, being patriotic is not being prejudice (Although, I personally believe that everyone is prejudiced in one way or another, such as 'my mother is better than yours'). By definition, it is the pride in one's country. If you hate your country so much, instead of rant about it, why not do something, or better yet, leave. But I digress.

Sorry to say this, but it's just not good enough to have legal papers to be a citizen of a country. At least have some sense of loyalty, eh? Like, I don't know... not making Iraq another Vietnam where we lose because of loss of support of the people and thousands of civilians died.
"I hate America! I hope we fail miserably!"
"But... you said you're an American."
"I am! I was born here!"
"But you want your country to fail and destroy the livelihoods of you and your countrymen?"
"Yes."
"Um, why?"
"Because George Bush sucks and we deserve it!"
"Then go to Venezuela and support Hugo Chavez and so South America can be united under one dicator..."

geography lesson for all you fucktards:
-
America is a country. It is short for the United States of America
-
North America is a continent.
South America is a continent.
Antarctica is a continent.
Africa is a continent.
Europe is a continent.
Asia is a continent.
Australia is both a continent and a nation.
-
If someone says "hey let's go to America" , they mean the USA!
^
If they don't mean the USA then it's too vague.Do they mean North America , or South America?
^
North and South are part of the name of these continents in order to distinguish one from the other just like how America (the USA) and Canada have two different names so as to distinguish two different countries from eachother with two different names.
-
Lay off the crack you fucktards.
Someone from the country America is an American.
Someone from the continent of North America is North American.Someone from the continent of South America is South American.
-
DEAL WITH IT!!!!!!

A nationality of people from the continent America, mainly used when refering to those from the USA. Although the country was colonized very recently in comparison to the civilised world. As reflected in their people, the country rapidly grew in size to become one of the largest presences in the modern world, this was mainly due to the over indulgence in the vast resources pilfered from around them.

The re-colonization of the Americas was mainly from European countries the main ones being Britain, Spain, France and the Netherlands.
From the lips of a Briton:
"We have done some bad things in our time, we sent our criminals to Austrailia, and our stupid people to America. Unfortunately, it was found that a great number of convicts were later found to have not commited the crime."
